A European Crime

Some Truths are so obvious, apparently, that they are never stated; and because they remain unstated, the cause of understanding is not well served.

One such unstated truth is this: It was not the Arabs who slaughtered 6,000,000 Jews, it was Europeans in Europe. But it was the Arabs as whole, and the Arabs of Palestine in particular, who, in effect, were punished for a European Crime.(Alan Hart)

India to launch cow urine as soft drink

Does your Pepsi lack pep? Is your Coke not the real thing? India's Hindu nationalist movement apparently has the answer: a new soft drink made from cow urine.

The bovine brew is in the final stages of development by the Cow Protection Department of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), India's biggest and oldest Hindu nationalist group, according to the man who makes it.

Om Prakash, the head of the department, said the drink – called "gau jal", or "cow water" – in Sanskrit was undergoing laboratory tests and would be launched "very soon, maybe by the end of this year".

"Don't worry, it won't smell like urine and will be tasty too," he toldThe Times from his headquarters in Hardwar, one of four holy cities on the River Ganges. "Its USP will be that it's going to be very healthy. It won't be like carbonated drinks and would be devoid of any toxins."

The drink is the latest attempt by the RSS – which was founded in 1925 and now claims eight million members – to cleanse India of foreign influence and promote its ideology of Hindutva, or Hindu-ness.

Hindus revere cows and slaughtering them is illegal in most of India. Cow dung is traditionally used as a fuel and disinfectant in villages, while cow urine and dung are often consumed in rituals to "purify" those on the bottom rungs of the Hindu caste system.

In 2001, the RSS and its offshoots – which include the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party – began promoting cow urine as a cure for ailments ranging from liver disease to obesity and even cancer.

The movement has often been accused of using more violent methods, such as killing 67 Christians in the eastern state of Orissa last year, and assaulting women in a pub in Mangalore last month. It also has a history of targeting foreign business in India, as in 1994, when it organised a nationwide boycott of multinational consumer goods, including Pepsi and Coca Cola.

The cola brands are popular in India, now one of their biggest markets, but have struggled in recent years to shake off allegations, which they deny, that they contain dangerous levels of pesticide.

Mr Prakash said his drink, by contrast, was made mainly of cow urine, mixed with a few medicinal and ayurvedic herbs. He said it would be "cheap", but declined to give further details about its price or ingredients until it was officially launched.

He insisted, however, that it would be able to compete with the American cola brands, even with their enormous advertising budgets. "We're going to give them good competition as our drink is good for mankind," he said. "We may also think of exporting it."

Parachuting Donkey

The case of the abused parachuting donkey seems to have taken a dark twist. The Moscow Times is reporting that the donkey and its owner seems to have gone missing. Investigators have failed to find the donkey that parasailed over the Sea of Azov for 30 terrifying minutes last week. The donkey’s owner faces charges of animal abuse, which are punishable by up to two years in prison, but a veterinarian needs to examine the animal to confirm that it was hurt before the charges can be filed, the report said, citing police. The owner, who has been identified, has disappeared together with the animal.

A sunburn wasn’t the only thing that Russian beachgoers were nervous about. Last week, Russians relaxing on the shores of the Sea of Azov got an odd surprise when they spotted a very frightened donkey parachuting. Attached to a parachute, the animal screamed in fear as it circled over heads of holidaymakers sunbathing on a beach in the Cossack village of Golubitskaya in the Krasnodar region. A regional police spokeswoman said the donkey ended up in the skies as a result of an impromptu advertising campaign by several Russian entrepreneurs to attract beachgoers to their private beach.

The donkey survived the ordeal but police are investigating the alleged organizers of the stunt and they could face animal cruelty charges.

Wife Trouble

A.K. Dogar once said, “I am under my wife’s command” to which Chief Justice Supreme Court’s reply was, “everyone except the Judges are under their wives’ command”. Chief Justice said this for everyone that they are commanded by the wives, but Mr. Zardari is one exception to this quote because he is under Rehman Malik & Babar Awan’s command and he has other commanders too.
It is the command by the wives that you see planes flying wide of their routes, because wives constantly see their husbands’ working in a total opposite way and they steer their husbands in reverse.
Once upon a time a Chief Justice had to stay at his house at Lahore where his wife raised a variety of objections on the house and ordered Chief Justice, her husband to have all the defects made good immediately to which Rs. 1.8M were spent in those inexpensive times. Anyway it is important to bring to the knowledge of Chief Justice of Pakistan that Honorable Judges too are not beyond the command and control of wives. Some say it is a universal fact that all educated, noble and especially high ranked officials are not outside their wives’ natural possession.
My mood: somewhat okay
